From the Constitution of the First Baptist Church of Jamesburg, NJ:
The Word of God in its entirety is the basis and foundation of this church and is summarized in the following:
1. We believe in the Old and New Testaments as verbally inspired, inerrant in the original writings, and that they are of supreme and final authority in faith and life (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21, Matthew 25:35).
2. We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-(Matthew 3:16,17; 1 Peter 1:2 (Father), Hebrews 1:8 (Son), Acts 5:3,4 (Holy Spirit)
3. We believe Jesus Christ was begotten of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and is true God and true man (Luke 1:26-35).
4. We believe that man was created in the image of God, that he sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God; that all human beings are born with a sinful nature, and that in the case of those who have reached moral responsibility, are become sinners in thought, word, and deed (Genesis 1:26; Genesis 3; Romans 3:23).
5. We believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him, and accept Him as their own personal Savior, are justified on the ground of His shed blood. (2 Corinthians 5:21; Romans 8:31-34; 10:9-11).
6. We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, in His Ascension into Heaven, and in His present life there for us as High Priest and Advocate (Luke 24:36-39; Mark 16:19).
7. We believe that salvation is by grace through faith, and that all who receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith, are born again of the Holy Spirit and thereby become children of God (Ephesians 2:8-11).
8. We believe in the personal and bodily return of our Lord Jesus Christ at any time (1 Thessalonians 4:11-18).
Aside from these statements above, we as Baptists also believe that every born-again, saved individual needs to be baptized by fully being immersed in water in obedience to the Lord's command, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We baptize only those who are old enough to proclaim faith in Christ. Therefore, we do not baptize infants. We dedicate babies and little children to the Lord as we see exemplified in the Bible with the infants Samuel and Jesus.
We also celebrate the Lord's Table, also known as Communion, once a month. Only those who are saved and who examine themselves to be sure that their walk with the Lord is what it should be are welcome to partake. We believe the bread and the cup are symbols of the body and the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, when Jesus suffered and died on the cross to save us. We remember His sacrifice on our behalf and give thanks to God for His precious gift of salvation. These two events, baptism and Communion, make up the two ordinances of our church, so called because the Lord commanded us to do them in the Bible. |
